DLIBA Artists' Group

Purpose of the DLIBA Artists' Group

The DLIBA Artists' Group is a volunteer, unfunded activity of the Deep Listening Institute Bay Area (DLIBA), comprised of people who support the goals of the Deep Listening Institute. The group meets a few times per year for social interaction, music-making, and discussions pertaining to furthering experimental music in the San Francisco Bay Area. Attendance is open to all with an interest in improvisation and experimental music.

The DLIBA Artists' Group continues the tradition of the artist group as a support network. To quote Larry Austin and Stanley Lunetta, an artist group provides a format or structure with the "intent . . . [of] being productive and inventive in the cause of new music. . . You can be a part of a group for musical reasons, for financial reasons, for survival, for security, for strength."

Overall Aims of the Artists' Group

An encapsulation of the overall aims of the DLIBA (then POFBA) Artists' Group, as discussed at the group's meeting on April 1, 2001, are as follows:

  1. The group was overwhelmingly interested in having regular meetings. Brenda Hutchinson suggested that the meetings occur on a monthly basis, and the group determined that a specific regular date in time be set aside for this purpose. At present, the first Sunday of each month, from 3:00 - 5:00 PM, is to be set aside for POFBA Artists' Group meetings (unless a major holiday falls on that weekend). The meetings are to take place at rotating locations: so far, Katherine Setar and Brad Fischer; Wendy Burch; Maryliz Smith; and Nancy Beckman have offered their homes as meeting places.
  2. The group was overwhelmingly interested in having meetings which emphasize social interaction and music-making. Meetings will be informal in their nature and content, with optional pot luck dining. Everyone is welcome at the meetings, regardless of musical ability or training.
  3. The group also expressed a desire to be the "people power" behind POF fundraisers held in the Bay Area. Katherine Setar suggested one easily implemented way in which the POFBA Artists' Group could help increase revenues. At fund-raising concerts where a large turnout is expected (such as the Terry Riley concert in December, 2000) the POFBA Artists' Group could organize the sale of refreshments at the concert's intermission at appropriate prices.

Meetings

Meetings are held several times per year. They are typically held during the first weekend of each month, but this may be changed due to holidays or other reasons. The host of each meeting is responsible for the schedule and agenda of that meeting, and for publicising the location, schedule and agenda.
